PayJunction is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to drive the success of 1-2 small engineering teams. These teams are responsible for our Smart Terminal Devices, our Virtual Terminal, and our Account Management Solution. This manager will play an active role in developing and completing engineering projects that align with company goals and reporting the results to stakeholders. Our ideal candidate should feel comfortable spending 15-20% of their time working in the code. They will also support the career development of the current team and hire new talent. Fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment is key.

Our Stack

We operate in a Linux and Mac environment, and use Java and Javascript for our development. Puppet is our infrastructure automation tool and we rely on Selenium, Karma and JUnit for testing. Learn more about our stack and engineering process read here:


Execution & Growth

  • Effective at managing a team’s engineering projects.
  • Define clear and measurable goals for the team.
  • Identify and clear roadblocks for the team.
  • Help the team debug difficult issues.
  • Delegates and supports technical implementations to ensure timely delivery.
  • Support the team by contributing bug fixes and small features.
  • Build a productive partnership with their Product Manager counterpart.
  • Build a productive partnership with Recruiting.
  • Can build a candidate profile and interview process with the help of Recruiting.
  • Actively sources for their team with direction from Recruiting and their Director.
  • Closes candidates with help from Recruiting and their Director.
  • Perform performance assessments, training, and career development for the team

Partnership & Planning

  • Partner effectively with stakeholders to manage scope and deliverables for the technical side of the team roadmap.
  • Make clear decisions, with quality judgment, when their team is faced with ambiguous choices.
  • Determine how to utilize the team’s resources to meet schedules and goals.
  • Communicates timeline, scope and technical concerns to PMs and other engineering managers.
  • Communicate project status to upper management.
  • Recommend changes to company policies and procedures.
  • Exercise good judgment in the tradeoff between technical debt and feature development.
  • Able to follow and understand their teams technical progress and domain, similar to Senior Engineer


  • Responsible for independently managing 1-2 teams of engineers.
  • Communicate context to the team.
  • Mediates disagreements.
  • Delegates technical implementation to the team.
  • Provide guidance about company policies to team members.
  • Set clear expectations for team members.
  • Solicit, synthesizes, and gives effective and motivating feedback.
  • Lead delivery of major initiatives on clear timelines.
  • Comfortable managing team members with different skill sets and technical areas of focus.
  • Attracts and retains team members.
  • Responsible for setting quarterly team goals with guidance.
  • Excel at getting the team to focus on the highest-impact projects.


  • 7+ years IC (Individual Contributor) experience with at least 3 years as a Senior Engineer
  • 3+ years engineering management experience
  • Experience mentoring and developing engineers
  • Experience proactively identifying and executing organizational, product improvements across several teams
  • Experience participating and contributing to strategic planning
  • Hands-on experience with professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and time management skills. Strong attention to detail.
